About Happiness

I have been wondering why I have been feeling less and less happy over time. I achieve more, I create more, however my level of happiness seems to decline, slowly, unconsciously.

It took me 2 hours sitting alone inside a cafe, drinking Earl Grey tea and enjoying myself a bowl of Truffle Chips to finally understand the decline of happiness inside of me. It is social media.

Social media has made me compare myself with others a little too much. On Instagram, I would see pictures of pretty girls and think, "she's so pretty". And my mind doesn't stop there, it goes on by thinking "oh look she's in NY, I wish I was there", "how nice she gets to gym regularly, I wish I had the time too", "her birthday party is so awesome", "I've never been to Maldives", "whattttt she has that bag already? It was just launched last month!". And not enough on Instagram, I start stalking them on Snapchat. I stalk what they eat, where they are, who they're with, and I feel happy for their awesome lives. Little did I know, this feeling, however, made myself feel less awesome, and hence less happy. Social media has accommodated this invisible competition among us youth, and believe me, it is unhealthy.

I have now started to filter the people and things I see on social media. If these accounts have an intimidating effect over my own self-confidence, I shall unfollow. And I use social media more for business nowadays. As for personal, I find more peace by just writing on this blog and create contents that I think might be useful for others on Youtube without having to care how many people read my post and watch my videos. When it comes to information on social media, less is more. I do not need to know everything, every time. Remember, keep the glass half empty, always.

  1. Kak D.....This is exactly why I look up to you so much. We have the same kind of thinking....

    Ini bener banget...

Ini kenapa aku selama dua mingguan sempet deactivate Instagram temporarily, just because I need a break. I unfollowed so many people, even my friends, just because I don't want to compare my life with them any longer. I deactivated my Snapchat for 2-3 years now because I realized this media platform will bring unhappiness to me karna waktu itu mau booming banget. I use Facebook to upload pictures and share important stuff, but I'm not heavily involved with it.

At the end, I feel more comfortable with my blog because I can write what I want and watch Youtube videos because the people whom I subscribed inspire me instead of intimidate me in a way.

I also use Twitter more often gara-gara udah banyak orang yang ga make, so it's more fun.. :p

I hope you find happiness within you soon and successfully take a break from the unhappiness part of using social media! :)

  4. kak Dianaaa, this is exactly what I feel too.
kayak rasa kepo terhadap seseorang jadi lebih tinggi. kemudian ngerasa kok dia udah liburan aja, kok mereka hang out terus, duh jalan jalan terus, beli ini beli itu, happy banget sih hidup mereka. kemudian hal ini lama lama mengurangi rasa bersyukur aku, rasanya jadi kurang terus. pengen kerja 24 jam nonstop, kemudian ngepush diri sendiri supaya bisa kayak mereka, dan paling parah jadi gampang menggerutu :(. dan lama lama aku juga ngerasa ini udah gak sehat, when I try harder aku sampai lupa mensyukuri segala hal yg aku dapat sekarang. dan bener banget kak Di, dengan memfilter siapa saja yg kita follow ternyata mengurangi rasa "enggak bersyukur" itu. begitu dahsyat dampak social media itu ya :D
I love your thought about happiness dari sisi ini kak Di, thanks for sharing :)

You speak absolute truth! Social media sometimes makes us feel miserable as we unconsciously compare our life with others..
We all need a break from this virtual world.. :)

Been using it for a while - and for me the result is amazing, the inner drive to stalk other people social media decline naturally (im not forcing my self to do it, its just i dont have that feeling to check other people anymore :) Maybe it can help you too :D

  15. Wow Diii seriously? even someone like you feel that way? you should realize that girls compare their life to you too, and sometimes you can be as intimidating as everyone else on the social media. But it's not your fault, obviously, this is why people shouldn't judge you or others only from their IG or snapchat and read more on the blogs and their writings.
